Students in the course CHILE: Visual Arts and Poetry in the Context of Dictatorship have a semester learning about the history of Chile through visual arts and poetry, engaging in a close study of expressions of political dissent in the art and literature of the country. Students learn about the art of making arpilleras (textile works of protest made by Chilean women during the dictatorship) and create their own. Mid-semester, the class travels for seven days to Santiago and Valparaíso as part of Global Journeys with Agnes Scott College. The professors facilitate encounters with important Chilean poets like Hector Hernandez, Paula Ilabaca, and Pablo Paredes as well as others such as Manolo Paredes--people who can talk about the Pinochet regime and their experiences under dictatorship. The students in the 2018 spring semester created a collaborative digital journal to be found HERE
